Alberta’s Client-Directed Home Care Invoicing: How it Works and How to Get Started

Client-Directed Home Care Invoicing (CDHCI) is Alberta Health Services’ newest program designed to give seniors and their families more choice and flexibility. With CDHCI, individuals can now select a trusted home care provider, like Umbrella Home Care, for services such as personal care, housekeeping, meal preparation, and respite support.

If your family is currently enrolled in Self-Directed Care or another community-based program, this new model removes the burden of managing staff and paperwork. CDHCI lets you focus on what matters most: getting the proper care from the right people.

At Umbrella Home Care, we’re here to guide you through every step of this transition with compassion, experience, and personalized support. This article will explore how Client-Directed Home Care Invoicing works and how you can get started.

CDHCI Explained

CDHCI is designed for seniors who require personal care and other services to ensure optimal health and safety while living at home. It provides funding for various senior home care services, including:

  • Assistance with activities of daily living, including bathing, mobility, and medication administration.
  • Housekeeping services, such as cooking and cleaning.
  • Respite care for primary/family caregivers.

While other programs in Alberta require seniors or family members to hire their own caregivers, handling everything from training to payroll and tax compliance, CDHCI is much easier to manage. Seniors in this program are able to have their services directly billed instead, meaning they get access to the same services without the additional administrative duties.

Qualifying for Client-Directed Home Care Invoicing

Client-directed home care is available for Albertans of all ages, provided they meet Alberta Health Services’ qualifying criteria.

  • You must reside in Alberta
  • You must have a valid Alberta Health Care card
  • You must be able to reside safely at home with the services provided
  • You must be determined to require home care services by an Alberta Health Services case manager

If you haven’t yet applied for CDHCI, you can request an assessment by calling Alberta Health Services at 811. If you’re already receiving home care through another Alberta Health Services program, contact your case manager to discuss your eligibility.

Receive Senior Care at Home Under the CDHCI Program

The CDHCI program can help you or your loved one access personal care, housekeeping services, and respite care funding from Alberta Health Services. This program ensures funding and access to the senior home care provider of your choice without the added task of administrative management.

Client-Directed Home Care Invoicing: FAQ

Who qualifies for the CDHCI program?

Anyone receiving publicly funded home care in Alberta may qualify. Eligibility is determined through an assessment by Alberta Health Services, based on the individual’s health needs and care requirements.

How is CDHCI different from Self-Directed Care?

Self-Directed Care requires families to manage staff, payroll, and insurance. CDHCI removes those administrative tasks. With CDHCI, clients receive the same flexibility and personalized care, but with the support of a licensed provider like us at Umbrella Home Care, who handles the operations.

Do I pay out of pocket for care under CDHCI?

No. Once your care plan is approved, Umbrella Home Care bills your insurance provider directly. This means no upfront costs or reimbursement processes for families.

How do I get started with CDHCI through Umbrella Home Care?

It begins with a health assessment from Alberta Health Services. Once approved for CDHCI, you can choose Umbrella Home Care as your care provider. We’ll work closely with you to create a personalized care plan and ensure a smooth transition.

Can Umbrella Home Care help with the application process?

Of course. We’ve helped many Alberta families navigate the CDHCI process. Our team can answer your questions, guide you through assessments, and help coordinate with Alberta Health Services to get everything set up.
